These signposts help me follow the overall argumentative structure of the article. Some of my signposts include:<ul><li>P1: Premise One (if I think the author is asserting a premise)<\/li><li>Obj: Objection\u00a0<\/li><li>Conclusion<\/li><li>Def: Definition<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>I then go back and read the article a third time \u2013 this time for critical reflection. Where do I agree? Where do I disagree?<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What if I am totally lost?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>If the article had section titles, read those <\/strong>as they will be clues to what the author is talking about.\u00a0<ul><li>If the article had section titles, read those as they will be clues to what the author is talking about. You might want to even write these section headings out on a piece of paper. For example, I\u2019m currently reading Noell Carroll\u2019s \u201cDefining the Moving Image.\u201d His section headings are as follows:\u00a0<br><ol><li>Background: The Problem of Medium-Essentialism<\/li><li>Revisiting Photographic Realism<\/li><li>The Moving Image<\/li><li>Performance Tokens<\/li><li>Two-Dimensionality<\/li><li>Concluding Remarks<\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote class=\"has-text-color has-accent-color\"><p>If I was lost reading the article, it might help to see these headings and piece together a \u201cplot\u201d from here. First I need to make sure I understand the terms listed in the section titles (i.e., medium-essentialism, photographic realism, performance tokens). Can I find definitions for these terms in the article (this is where your signposts come in handy)?\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>My article doesn\u2019t have section titles \u2013 help! Well, try to create section titles for the article!\u00a0<\/strong><ul><li>One way to do this is to read each paragraph and assign it a term or phrase. What is this paragraph about? Then you can group paragraphs together (e.g., these three paragraphs are all about photographic realism \u2013 so I will make a section heading called \u201cPhotographic Realism\u201d).\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Re-read the introduction to the article and the conclusion. <\/strong>This should give you some big picture ideas as to what the author is trying to argue.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>I do not recommend going to youtube and\/or looking for help on the internet as a solution to being lost.<\/strong> While I might show some youtube videos in class, I have enough background knowledge to be able to sort out the bad from the good. When you are first learning a subject, you do not have the requisite background to do just that. Further, part of the goal of this (and all) philosophy course is to engage with difficult reading. Going to the internet and seeking out someone else\u2019s\u2019 notes on the reading does not, in fact, service this goal.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote is-style-default\"><blockquote class=\"has-text-color has-accent-color\"><p><span class=\"has-inline-color has-accent-color\">If you\u00a0<strong>must<\/strong>\u00a0go to internet sources, the only sources I will stand by are the SEP (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) and the IEP (Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy). <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"a\"><li><strong>Ask a classmate what they think! <\/strong>Talk it through \u2013 use your classmates as resources!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"a\"><li><strong>Finally, why not come in to <a href=\"http:\/\/escarbro.appointy.com\">office hours<\/a> and ask me? <\/strong>We can puzzle it through together!<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Scarbrough&nbsp; Some notes on reading philosophy I always read the article first very quickly (5-10 min) to get \u201cthe plot\u2019 &#8212; figure out where the author starts and where she ends.
