{"id":252,"date":"2020-01-21T19:03:26","date_gmt":"2020-01-21T23:03:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/myweb.fiu.edu\/escarbro\/?p=252"},"modified":"2020-02-19T15:20:07","modified_gmt":"2020-02-19T19:20:07","slug":"top-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/myweb.fiu.edu\/escarbro\/2020\/01\/21\/top-5\/","title":{"rendered":"Top 5 (Top 5 Documentaries)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>First I want to say that the name of this post is a reference (homage?) to an underrated Chris Rock movie,  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wJ0Qhbm3Xj8\">Top 5<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wJ0Qhbm3Xj8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But today I wanted to talk about &#8220;Top 5&#8221; lists. Recently I wrote two Top 5 lists for <a href=\"https:\/\/aestheticsforbirds.com\">Aesthetics For Birds<\/a>: my top five <a href=\"https:\/\/aestheticsforbirds.com\/2019\/12\/03\/9-movie-experts-on-their-top-5-films-of-the-decade\/\">movies<\/a> of the past ten years and top five <a href=\"https:\/\/aestheticsforbirds.com\/2019\/12\/09\/8-experts-reveal-their-top-5-in-the-decades-writing\/\">novels <\/a>of the past ten years. Aesthetics For Birds did a series of top five lists for <a href=\"https:\/\/aestheticsforbirds.com\/2019\/12\/03\/9-movie-experts-on-their-top-5-films-of-the-decade\/\">movies<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/aestheticsforbirds.com\/2019\/12\/09\/8-experts-reveal-their-top-5-in-the-decades-writing\/\">writing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/aestheticsforbirds.com\/2019\/12\/28\/experts-rank-the-top-5-in-this-decades-art\/\">art,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/aestheticsforbirds.com\/2019\/12\/17\/8-experts-reveal-their-top-5-tv-shows-of-the-decade\/\">TV shows<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/aestheticsforbirds.com\/2019\/12\/06\/game-experts-rank-their-top-5-games-of-the-decade\/\">games<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/aestheticsforbirds.com\/2019\/12\/23\/7-experts-rank-the-decades-top-5-in-music\/\">music<\/a>, and a really fun <a href=\"https:\/\/aestheticsforbirds.com\/2019\/12\/31\/afb-staff-list-their-top-10-of-the-decade\/\">top ten anything list<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, my movie list (with brief justificatory summary) was overwhelmingly non-English speaking and male. On the foreign language heavy focus of my list: I&#8217;m with Bong Joon Ho whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bustle.com\/p\/parasite-director-bong-joon-hos-golden-globes-speech-lobbied-for-foreign-films-19767076\">Golden Globe speech<\/a> implored folks to get beyond the &#8220;1-inch tall barrier of subtitles.&#8221; Your world literally opens up if you watch world cinema. However, I do feel uncomfortable with the maleness of the list I presented.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mX3obZ0lXoU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When I think of some of my favorite documentaries of the past ten years, my list is overwhelmingly English-language but not that more gender-balanced. So I urge you to read everyone&#8217;s lists over at Aesthetics for Birds, and I&#8217;d like to add a list of five favorite documentaries of the past ten years below (in no particular order):&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Cave of Forgotten Dreams<\/em> (Herzog, 2010) <\/li><li><em>I am not your negro<\/em> (Peck, 2016)<\/li><li><em>Exit Through the Gift Shop<\/em> (Banksy? 2010)<\/li><li><em>Faces Places<\/em> (Varda and J.R., 2017)<\/li><li><em>Shirkers<\/em> (Tan, 2018)&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m not including <em>The Act of Killing<\/em> on this list, since it made my overall best of the last ten year list (but <em>The Act of Killing <\/em>is a favorite documentary of mine). And I&#8217;m not even sure if these are the documentaries I think are *the best* but they are the ones I&#8217;ve enjoyed watching the most.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some honorable mentions: Finding Vivian Maier, Leviathan, Kedi, and The Black Power Mixtape.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First I want to say that the name of this post is a reference (homage?) to an underrated Chris Rock movie, Top 5.
