{"id":313,"date":"2021-10-22T12:29:16","date_gmt":"2021-10-22T16:29:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/myweb.fiu.edu\/escarbro\/?p=313"},"modified":"2021-10-22T12:29:16","modified_gmt":"2021-10-22T16:29:16","slug":"can-food-be-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/myweb.fiu.edu\/escarbro\/2021\/10\/22\/can-food-be-art\/","title":{"rendered":"Can food be art?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>One of my favorite units in my Global Aesthetics class is &#8220;Can food be art?&#8221; Philosophers are paying more attention to the aesthetics of taste and the ethics of food production. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For my unit on food, I ask students to read the Telfer, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/food.unt.edu\/arguments\/Telfer.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"> &#8220;Can Food Be Art?&#8221;<\/a> &#8211; and in 2020 I won (hooray!) an instructional video contest through <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/humanitiesedge.fiu.edu\/digital-resources\/instructional-video-contest-winners\/\" target=\"_blank\">Humanities Edge!<\/a> It was my first attempt at a video for class (done at the beginning of COVID) &#8211; I&#8217;m not as good as most of my students, but it was fun to do. I won in the category &#8220;how to disagree with experts.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Food as Art Scarbrough\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JVyhvrAlYmM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>Video about whether food can be art (video does have captions) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But my attempt at a video cannot compare to the videos submitted by my students! For the class, I asked students to make an instructional video on how to make a &#8220;dish&#8221; important to their identity (e.g., as a Cuban-American, as a college student, as a Miamian, etc.). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are just a few of the amazing videos submitted.
