The fellowship will provide some funding for Ingrid to work on her project that will investigate the experiences of males, females, and gender non-binary students in chemistry and how those experiences have affected their identity as a chemistry person. Well done!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #04b8e0\">April 30, 2021<\/span><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to two CRG members who graduated today! Group members <span style=\"color: #04b8e0\"><strong>Jake Carrier <\/strong><\/span>and <span style=\"color: #04b8e0\"><strong>German Mejia<\/strong><\/span> graduated with their BS in Chemistry. They&#8217;ve BOTH been accepted to FIU to start doctoral programs in the fall! Jake will be starting a PhD in Chemistry Education Research and German will be starting a PhD in Biochemistry. So proud of these two CRG alumni!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #04b8e0\">Spring 2021<\/span><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>COVID and remote teaching took its hold, but there have been a number of additions to the CRG! He was thrilled to be able to share what he has been up to in the 10 years(!) since graduating from <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.naz.edu\/dept\/chemistry\">Nazareth&#8217;s chemistry<\/a> program! Great time for reconnecting with familiar faces and meeting the students currently in the program.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #04b8e0\"><strong>July 29, 2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Norda was accepted to and attended the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acs.org\/content\/acs\/en\/education\/students\/graduate\/gettingready\/academiccareers\/postoral-workshop-for-prospective-chemistry-faculty.html\">ACS Postdoc to Faculty<\/a> (P2F) Workshop helping her to further prepare for a career in academia!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #04b8e0\"><strong>July 22, 2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Norda was accepted to and attended the <a href=\"http:\/\/chemistry.miamioh.edu\/bretzsl\/cergsc\/2019\/\">CER Postdoc and Graduate Student Conference<\/a> held at Miami University in Oxford, OH. This was a great time for her to meet other CER graduate students and postdocs and learn valuable lessons for her future career as a researcher!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #04b8e0\"><strong>June 21, 2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Justin and Norda attended and presented their work at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grc.org\/chemistry-education-research-and-practice-conference\/2019\/\">Gordon Research Conference for Chemistry Education Research and Practice.<\/a> The GRC was held at Bates College in Lewiston, ME.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #04b8e0\"><strong>May 31, 2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Justin was a facilitator at the Cottrell Scholars&#8217; Collaborative National Graduate Teaching Assistant Workshop! The article in the <em>Journal of Chemical Education<\/em> highlights her doctoral work on incorporating the Science Writing and Workshop Template into first-year chemistry lab courses. Way to go, Norda!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #04b8e0\"><strong>January 17, 2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Justin and colleagues have published two manuscripts in the <em>Journal of Chemical Education!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One article is a result of an invited symposium at the Biennial Conference on Chemical Education and discusses how to support and grow the impact of the CER community.<\/p>\n<p>The other is about the characterization of laboratory reform efforts and evaluation of classroom materials for evidence that students may engage with the Scientific Practices.<\/p>\n<p>Check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/myweb.fiu.edu\/jcarmel\/publications\/\"><span style=\"color: #04b8e0\">Publications<\/span><\/a> page for links to the articles!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #04b8e0\"><strong>January 17, 2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Justin and colleagues had a <a href=\"https:\/\/authors.elsevier.com\/c\/1YPY7_,qcWc4Uu\">paper<\/a> published! The article in <em>Contemporary Educational Psychology<\/em> investigates students&#8217; identity development trajectories and their impacts on success and the pursuit of STEM careers.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #04b8e0\">January 3, 2019<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With a hectic fall semester, the Carmel group grew again! Please join us in welcoming an undergraduate and a post-baccalaureate researcher:<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #04b8e0\">Natalie Mendez<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>was an LA with Justin this past year and was intrigued by the change in dynamic that re-arranging students in the classroom space produced. Natalie is using student-reported data to investigate the routes of communication within the classroom environments and any impact it had on success in the course.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #04b8e0\"><strong>John Vihlen<\/strong><\/span> has been a TA in the Chemistry department teaching our Chemistry and Society lab for a number of semesters. John is working with Justin and Dr. Uma Swamy on the re-design of the lab to make it more project-based and how to mitigate some of the issues transferring project-based activities to an online\/at home environment.<\/p>\n<p>Keep an eye out for the Carmel Research Group at the ACS National Meeting in Orlando this April. <span style=\"color: #04b8e0\"><strong>Everyone<\/strong><\/span> will be presenting their work in either a talk or a poster. More on this as things get scheduled, stay tuned!<\/p>\n<p>Also, Justin and colleagues had a paper published in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/advances.sciencemag.org\/content\/4\/10\/eaau0554\">Science Advances<\/a>. <\/em>This article describes the change in instructor assessments over time as a result of a large-scale pedagogical change at Michigan State University, way to go!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #04b8e0\"><strong>August 8, 2018<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Carmel Research Group had a number of presentations at this year&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bcce2018.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Biennial Conference on Chemical Education<\/a> at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN.<\/p>\n<p>Norda gave a presentation titled <em>Development and analysis of scientific practices assessment tasks for the chemistry laboratory<\/em>. The talk highlighted the the development process for the assessment tasks and some preliminary data from their use with students.<\/p>\n<p>Justin gave an invited talk with <a href=\"https:\/\/chem.unl.edu\/marilyne-stains\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Marilyne Stains<\/a> from the University of Nebraska &#8211; Lincoln titled <em>I\u2019m finally a doctor, what do I do now? The role of a post-doctoral experience in CER<\/em>. This talk emphasized the impact of a postdoctoral experience and how it may shape one&#8217;s career.<\/p>\n<p>Justin co-presented a talk with Dr. Uma Swamy from FIU titled <em>Incorporation of a project-based lab curriculum into a hybrid chemistry lab for non-science majors<\/em>. His talk, titled &#8220;Developing assessment tasks for the scientific practices: Alignment, design, and testing&#8221; outlined the preliminary stages of task development for the Science Practices Assessment Project. Lots of great questions and excitement about the project!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #04b8e0\"><strong>February 9, 2018<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Congratulations!! Justin and colleagues&#8217; <em>JChemEd<\/em> publication \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/acs.jchemed.7b00645\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adapting assessment tasks to support three-dimensional learning<\/a>\u201d was selected as <a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/359\/6376\/twil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Editor\u2019s Choice<\/a> in Science Magazine.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #04b8e0\"><strong>February 8, 2018<br \/><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re still growing!\u00a0 Join me in welcoming a post-baccalaureate researcher to our group, Delaney Serlin. (Award <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=1708506&amp;HistoricalAwards=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#1708506:<\/a> Collaborative Research: Developing Items to Assess Students&#8217; Understanding of Scientific Practices in Chemistry Laboratory Settings)<\/p>\n<p>The second is part of a multi-institutional, cross-disciplinary grant that extends the work of a project that Dr. Carmel worked on while at Michigan State. He and his co-PI at FIU, <a href=\"http:\/\/myweb.fiu.edu\/sunderwo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sonia Underwood<\/a>, will be working to make a more coherent experience for those that enroll in the gateway STEM courses, through use of the scientific practices, crosscutting concepts, and core ideas.
