1990\u20132007 Co-Chair of the \u201cSpecial Interest Group in Behavioral Development<\/em>\u201d Convention Programming for the Association for Behavior Analysis<\/em> (ABA). Beginning in 1990, every year we have submitted and average of 15 symposia for the annual meeting of the Association. I invited highly renowned speakers to this conference (e.g., Kurt Fisher from Harvard University; Hayne Reese, West Virginia University; Tom Bower, UCLA Willis Overton, Temple University, William Baum, UC\u2013Davis, Kurt Salzinger, APA).  The programs of the symposia organized are annually organized and published in the Behavioral Development Bulletin<\/em>, Martha Pelaez, Editor.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1992 Member, Steering Committee of International Conference for Infant Studies (ICIS).<\/em>  In collaboration with Dr. Tiffany Field of the University of Miami developed the program and prepared local arrangements for the International Conference of Infant Studies, May 7-10, Miami Beach.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          1999\u20132006 Member of the Advisory Council<\/em> of Faculty Senates of the State of Florida (ACFS).  The ACFS consist of 22 faculty senators that represent all the Faculty Senates in the 11 Florida Public Universities.  This group advises to the Chancellor (Chairman) of the State University System.  It serves as a mechanism to discuss issues of importance to higher education and to the entire SUS and provides input from a faculty perspective. The group meets in Tallahassee 3-4 times a year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          2000\u20132003 Vice-Chair of the Faculty Senate<\/em>, Florida International University. I assisted the Chair Rock on many duties and decision-making process. Presented and defended steering-committee motions on the senate floor.  I took over his responsibilities in his absence (Howard Rock, Chairman). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were able to start the next fiscal year without cuts.  Our enrollment growth at FIU was funded and we will be receiving more than $21 million for new facilities construction. In addition, the legislature funded our enrollment growth, authorized an increase in our athletic fee that will allow us to move to NCAA IA football, and provided funds for an FIU\/USF partnership that advances us toward the goal of opening a medical school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two schools of Medicine projects were carefully considered and reviewed by the Florida Board of Governors for more than one year during a series of meetings. On March 23 in Tallahassee our BOG approved FIU\u2019s and UCF\u2019s proposals for two new medical schools as part of a solution to help alleviate a pending doctor shortage at the state level and build on the economic momentum from the continued development of biotechnology and life sciences initiatives. The new public School of Medicine at FIU in Miami alone is estimated to create more 12,000 new jobs and have an annual impact in excess of $1.1 billion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

              2006  Member<\/em> of Search & Screen Committee<\/em> for the first Dean of the new FIU Medical School, John Rock (Divina Grossman, Chair Herbert Wertheim, Co-Chair). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

              2007\u20132008 Member of Search & Screen Committee<\/em> for the director of the new Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum (Dean Juan Martinez, Chair, Patricia Frost, Member), College of Architecture. The new Museum will move into a new 46,000-square-foot, state of the art facility with nine galleries and numerous exhibits. This committee searched for a candidate with distinguish record of sustained professional achievement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

              2009\u20132012 Member of the FIU Faculty Senate Ad Hoc Global Learning Curriculum Oversight Committee<\/em>.  <\/strong>This 5-member committee does the work for the Senate in reviewing and approving all new courses submitted for the Global Learning University required core. The committee reviews the syllabi in terms of their assessment plans and discipline-specific readings and content as well as interdisciplinary content and readings, active learning strategies, and integrated co-curricular activity. As reviewers we considered whether: (1) the required readings include the common core reading and learning outcomes; (2) the syllabus describes the active learning components (such as student site visits) of the course; and (3) the readings are linked to lectures in a way that clarifies the Global Learning content of the course. Reviewed more than 100 courses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
