Final Metacritical Assessment
Throughout this project, my website did not undergo drastic changes in content. However, it did see important revisions in how that content is presented. Instead of constantly adding new elements, I focused on improving clarity, readability, and the overall user experience.
One of the main changes I made was adjusting how I structured my writing. Earlier in the semester, I relied heavily on bullet points and longer sections of text. While this helped organize ideas, it sometimes made the writing feel too segmented or overwhelming. Based on course readings like “Letting Go of the Words” by Janice Redish, I began to see that effective web writing is not just about breaking information into lists. It is about creating a smooth and readable flow for users scanning content.
As a result, I revised several pages by reducing excessive bullet points and rewriting sections into shorter, more natural paragraphs. This made the content feel less mechanical and more engaging to read. At the same time, I shortened longer passages to make them easier to scan. This aligns with the idea that online readers prefer concise and accessible information.
Another important takeaway from the course was that usability is not just about navigation but also about how comfortable the content is to read. Even though I had included images from the beginning, I became more aware of how text length, spacing, and structure affect the user experience. These smaller adjustments helped improve the overall readability of my site without completely redesigning it.
In terms of SEO, my changes were more subtle but still intentional. According to Brad Shorr in “The Ultimate Guide to SEO Copywriting Keyword Research,” effective SEO starts with understanding user intent, not simply inserting keywords. Instead of dramatically changing my keyword strategy, I focused on ensuring my content clearly reflects its purpose, so it naturally fits what users might be searching for.
Additionally, Julia McCoy’s “SEO Copywriting: The Complete Guide” highlights the need to balance readability with keyword placement. Keeping this in mind, I avoided overusing keywords and concentrated on writing clearly while structuring my content with headings and concise paragraphs. This approach supports both user experience and search visibility without making the writing feel forced.
Overall, my process shifted from adding more content to refining what was already there. This project helped me understand that effective web writing is not always about major changes. It is about making thoughtful revisions that improve clarity, usability, and the reader’s experience. By applying ideas from the course readings, I made my site more readable, more intentional, and better suited for an online audience.
